1. Eat the right fats. Don't eat trans fats, which are laden in store-bought baked goods, and lots of the packaged commercial goods. Yuck. Don't even. Experts have even speculated the trans fats inhibit fertility. Go for olive oil, coconut oil, eat nuts and avocados. Whatever you do, don't skimp on healthy fats. You'll need them to prepare your body for a baby.
2. Speaking of fats, eat whole-fat milk products. A while back, I'd encountered news that women who eat low-fat dairy aren't as likely to get pregnant as women who ate full-fat dairy. So go for whole milk, full-fat yogurt and kefir (yum!)-isn't this a great excuse to not have to skimp on the fat, to not have to sacrifice by drinking 2%.
3. Though this isn't necessarily a food in that you'd eat it regularly, but it does hail from a plant source: vitex. This really helps out women who are looking to get pregnant. The hormone progesterone is critical for getting pregnant, and maintaining pregnancy. Highly estrogenic foods such as ginger, sage, parsley, celery, etc. should not be eaten in high doses while one is pregnant, for one could terminate her pregnancy. Vitex, or chasteberry, helps regulate the production of progesterone. Try the tincture extract-I've tried the vitex pills, but somehow my body responded better to the tinctures and the whole berries. This herb is great, by the way, for regulating menstruation. Many women who have PMS-related acne swear by vitex to help them control it.
4. Personally, I hate the soy craze. It's ridiculous, it's so American to take a good thing and multiply it, mass-produce it to the point that it's an uncontrolled conflagration of madness. And in the midst of this madness, people are discovering that whatever the newest greatest god was, is merely a big deception of marketing. No one is supposed to eat bread made with soybean oil, salad dressing with soybean derivatives and oil, soy milk, protein in the form of powdered soy-what on earth! If we are to learn from the Asian cultures that do eat soy, it's that fermented soy is beneficial- in small amounts. But take it in its unfermented form-and take it in gigantic amounts, it is going to pose some serious problems. It's goitrogenic (meaning, it inhibits the activities of the thyroid), it's estrogen-mimicking, and it's hard for the body to digest. And guys are starting to find out that they're affected-they are less fertile. So if you want to up your chances of getting pregnant, make sure your partner is not eating soy in its every form. Have him look at labels (which will be a study in itself), and also, make sure that he's getting enough zinc. That helps with sperm health and production.
