Fertilizer and Pesticide Recommendations for Your Garden

Donna Sager
Fertilizers are great for boosting your plants and balancing the nutrients needed to make healthy plants grow. Although you may get many recommendations for fertilizers you should still do research on the plants and products in order to not ruin your plants. Some fertilizers can do damage to your plants if they are not made for a certain type of plant. Pesticides can be used to get rid of numerous insects, and other pests that may do damage to your flower or vegetable gardens. Growing a large vegetable garden myself every year, I use the 12-12-12 fertilizer (also known as triple 12). Using 10-20-10 for onions is another good idea, and peat, sulfur and triple 12 can be used for potatoes. There is also rotenone which can be used on all plants. Ortho sevin dust is an excellent pesticide although it can cause some problems with health for humans and domestic animals.

12-12-12 fertilizer is a combination of 12% nitrogen, 12% phosphorous, and 12% potash, and can be used on many plants such as trees, shrubs, vegetables, flowers and ornamental gardens. Nitrogen is a key nutrient in plant growth. Phosphorus is what provides plants with a mechanism for using and transferring, and potassium aids in cell wall growth, helping to make the plant withstand heat, cold, frost, and disease better. Using this fertilizer can really boost plant health and growth. This fertilizer can be bought at many stores and greenhouses, such as Tractor Supply Company, Meier's, Menards, and Lowe's.

Pesticides should be thoroughly researched before choosing or using one as they can do damage and be very harmful to the health of both humans and animals if not used properly. Ortho sevin dust is an excellent choice for most pest and insect removal. It can even be used to get rid of fleas on your animals if used according to the directions carefully. It should be kept in a cool dry place, and you should always wear gloves and a mask when using this product. You should try to avoid contact with your skin and clothing with this product. Always wash thoroughly after use and avoid breathing in the dust. Ortho sevin dust if not used carefully and correctly can be hazardous to both humans and domestic animals. It kills approximately 65 different insects and pests and can be used up until harvest on many fruits and vegetables. It works great in getting rid of insects and pests such as, armyworms, bean leaf beetles, cabbage caterpillars, corn earworms, fleas, Japanese beetles, leaf hoppers, melon worms, sap beetles, stink bugs, ticks, tomato fruit worm, western bean cutworm, and many more. It can be used on beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, corn, cucumbers, eggplants, lettuce, melons, peppers, potatoes, squash, strawberries, tomatoes, and more. You should read packaging labels carefully for this product as it can harm some plants. It is not good for use on all types and may burn the plant. This product can be purchased at many locations, such as Tractor Supply Company, Ace Hardware, Meier's, and Wal-Mart.

You should not just go out and pick up these specific pesticides and fertilizers without knowing more about them. Do your research and make sure they are what are best for your use before deciding the type of products that will be best for your garden and plant types.
