East Peoria's Annual Festival of Lights is in its 24th year of existence, and this year promises more events and sights than ever before.
The festival started off on November 24, with the Parade of Lights. This one-night only event rivals any lighted parade that could be seen in Walt Disney World. The parade consisted of over 40 light displays floats which was showcased along a three-mile route down the streets of East Peoria. Kids were delighted in seeing a big dog robot display come down the street. Who wouldn't want to have that two story high dog under their tree on Christmas morning.
The festival also offers FOLEPI's Winter Wonder Land. This attraction is open November 25-December 31, and spot lights two miles of light displays and Christmas themed light shows. Families can enjoy life-like nativity scene where you can listen to the Nativity story told on 1610 AM radio.
People who want to see the lights in a new and exciting way, can try out a returning attraction at the East Peoria Festival of Lights, Evening hot air balloon rides are being offered in FOLEPI's Village. The tethered rides are being offered for free and will occur Dec 7-8, and Dec 14-15, Dec. 21-22 and Dec 28-29, weather permitting. Jennifer Hendrickson, visiting the festival for the 6th year with her family stated that the ride made the hour trip from her home in Walnut to the festival worth it.
"You think the lights are cool when you see them in front of you, but you should see them from 80 ft in the air. It is beautiful. There is nothing like it."
While most of the events are free to the public there are some activities that cost to get into.
FOLEPI's Winter Wonder Land will be offering a new laser show, which runs 5-10 pm Sunday through Thursday, and 5-11 pm on Saturday and Sunday costs $10 per car, each night. Carnival type rides will also be offered, and the cost depends on the number of tickets purchased to ride them.
The Festival of Lights is entirely run by volunteers, is one of the largest in the United States. The festival runs November 24 to December 31, and offers something for families every night. With most of the activities free to the public , and new floats and displays added every year it is the best entertainment for a family on a budget.
