Fever Tips for Parents

Dale Miller
I don't know any parent who hasn't found them self with a thermometer in hand wondering if there is an easier way to take their child's temperature and better yet should the doctor get a call? There are pacifier thermometers, ear thermometers and a whole line up of different kinds, but getting your child to hold still while the thermometer is working and doing its job sometimes is like winning the lottery. Some tips for the pacifier thermometer would be to put something sweet on it that will capture the little one's attention such as apple juice or even milk. Just a dab because too much liquid could damage the electronic parts of the thermometer.

If your child is running around, being playful, eating and drinking normally, then you probably can skip giving them medicine. The medicine is mostly used for pain and suffering. It usually makes them comfortable during times of illness. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen are both used to reduce a child's fever. Consult a doctor regarding how much to give the child. They both work differently to bring down fevers so they can be alternated. Be sure to get instructions from a doctor or qualified pharmacist.

When your child has an illness and especially accompanied with a fever, your biggest concern should be keeping them hydrated. There are plenty of things they can have to avoid dehydration such as water, sports drinks, fruit cups, sherbet, juice, popsicles, ice cream and watermelon. If you see that your child is not acting like they usually do and seem like they are weak or sluggish then they need your help. Take their temperature a few times and give them some food and liquids to keep them hydrated. When their lips are dry or cracked then that could be a sign of dehydration. With a little one in diapers, you can tell they need more fluids if they have had a dry diaper for five or six hours.

It is recommended to call a doctor if your child is 3 months old or less and has a fever of 100 or more. If the child is 3 months to 2 years old and has a fever of 103 then you should report it to your doctor. If your child is over 2 years old and has a fever of 104 then you should call the doctor. Anytime you notice weakness, confusion, abnormal breathing or stiffness in the neck, medical attention is necessary.
