There are no complicated patterns to follow or stitches to count (past the first row) and the entire blanket only requires three spools of soft, rainbow-dyed cotton string. In fact, you will only need a total of 4 items to make the entire blanket, and all are available from the craft section of your local Wal-Mart store.
Supplies
- 3 large, cone spools of "Peaches & Crème" 4-ply, 100% cotton string, in peppercorn ombre (color #180) for less than $7.00 per spool
- 1 crochet hook, size "J" or #10 (or any medium-size hook you are comfortable using) about $4.00 for a multi-pack with several sizes
While purchasing your supplies ask the sales associate for a quick refresher course in crocheting 101, or watch an instructional video in the privacy of your home, online from YouTube or at www.AssociatedContent.com (by Yahoo!).
Directions
Begin by casting-on about 150 chain stitches for a twin-size blanket. Then change direction and single-crochet your first row of 150 stitches onto your chain stitches, adding one extra chain stitch before turning to begin the next row/s.
There's nothing to it, no fancy stitches, only straight single-crochet stitches back-and-forth. The rainbow-dyed string/yarn will create the beautiful fiesta-confetti patterns all over your blanket. Continue back-and-forth for about 200 rows, however you will have enough yarn left-over to make it longer, if you prefer.
Knot the last stitch and weave the tail back through the stitches. You should have enough of this festive rainbow yarn left over to crochet a winter scarf or belt, as per simple instructions found in the article "Crochet a Festive Baja Belt or Scarf with Shell Accents" at http://look.ac/czGem5 or on my family-friendly news page online at www.AssociatedContent.com/cmajors . Post a CommentSometimes the most simple afghans are the most beautiful. And I love the different types of yarns.
Thanks for commenting and stopping by to read Eddina!!! I love using big crochet hooks too, as you say it does go much faster, and is still very warm. I'll share a secret with you, this particular afgahn was for my son's room, and I found out the hard way that he (as have a couple other kids of mine) likes to stick his toes through any loose stitches and pull, which of course unravels the bottom portion of knit blankets. So I made this one with tighter stitches!
I use BIG hooks and big yarn, so it all goes very fast. Makes a loose stitch, but is still quite warm, nd nicely lightweight.
