Fife High School Football Team Hits Thier Stride

Fife High School Trojan football team hit their stride in the last two weeks, capping a two-game winning streak.

On Sept. 26, the Trojan's offense disassembled the Washington High School Patriots defense scoring 47 points on 253 yards rushing.

Coach Kent Nevin continued to look to his running backs Alex Rohrer, Tyler Richards and Brad Flinlayson to produce competitive rushing results going into the next week's games. The Trojans would dig deep against the struggling Steilacoom High School Sentinels and come out on top 16-9.

With 9:36 left in the first quarter, the Trojans struck first, with a 78-yard-rushing touchdown by Rohrer. The Trojans came up short on the extra point however.

With 4:42 remaining in first quarter, the Sentinels took advantage of a rare break in defense. Quarterback Joey Vela connected with wide receiver Darien Anthony in the back of the end zone, knotting it up. The Sentinels came up short on the extra point.

In the second quarter with the game tied, Rohrer continued to dominate the rushing attack, averaging 6 yards per carry. The Trojans' kicker Nick Belcourt nailed a 33-yard field goal early in the second half, giving the Trojans a 9-6 lead at the half.

The Trojan defense made the stop of the game with a 10-yard interception return from senior defensive back Joe Kosloski. With the Belcourt extra point, the Trojans led, 16-6, and the defense did the job from there.

"The 'guys up front' is where it started," Rohrer said. "The line practiced so hard this week and it showed. The line does all the dogfights upfront making my job easy; I just find a hole and go. All the credit goes to the line."

Defensive tackle, junior KC Farley contributed to huge stops on defense. He talked about his role and game-changing moments.

"Our defense today was really great; we really started hitting well. When I am out there I just try to pump everyone up. I just want to cause havoc and get that sack," Coach Nevin said. "The game changing moment was in the fourth quarter when our line put pressure on the quarterback, which resulted in a pick-for-six for Kosloski."

"Our big thing tonight was shutting down their run and forcing their pass. On defense we are getting better, and that has to do with our kids staying after practice and hitting the sled. Our kids are dedicated and pushing it."

The Trojans travel to Klahowya Oct. 9 to play an Eagles team that lost to Sequim, 47-0, in their last contest.
