Fifty Pieces of Classical Music for Halloween

Michael Segers
For some people, unfortunately, any classical music may sound scary, but for some of us, classical music for Halloween may be just the treat we need to go along with all the tricks. In fact, here is a list of fifty pieces of classical music, from composers ranging from Johann Sebastian Bach to John Williams. You can find the lists that I compiled these pieces of classical music for Haloween from, suggestions for listening, and with each item, a link to a biography of its composer. Think about it: all these treats with no calories or threat of hidden razor blades. Enjoy... and give "Monster Mash" and "Thriller" a rest.

Where did this list of classical music for Halloween come from?
After checking several Internet lists, I decided to use these five. I use the letters A-E to identify them, when I list the items below. A few of the items did not come from any lists. They are my own contributions (and are so identified).

How can I find and listen to this classical music for Halloween?
The best source for classical music on the Internet is Classical Archives (http://www.classicalarchives.com), which has varying accessibility for non-members and paid members. If you are a fan of classical music, you might give yourself a special treat of a membership.

Another great source of music (of all kinds) on the Internet is YouTube (http://www.youtube.com). Two special treasures from this list are an excerpt from Fantasia, starring Mickey Mouse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUCpCimC2f4 based on "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," and "Stride la vampa," from Il Trovatore, with Fiorenza Cossotto (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swkY88OFPO8), an aria wilder than anything you'll find at the video store. A woman sings about her mother being burned to death as a witch. To get revenge, she had kidnapped the son of the count who had sentenced her mother to death and threw the infant into the flames with her mother. Too late, she realized that it was her own son. To add to the horror, she is singing the aria (or telling the story) to a young man who had always thought that he was her son, but in fact, he was the son of the count.

You can also listen to excerpts Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com).
