Fifty Pills (2006): A Movie Review

Jennifer Sapa
Fifty Pills is a comedy starring Lou Taylor Pucci as Darren and Kristen Bell as Gracie. Darren is a college freshman who loses his college scholarship because of his hard-partying roommate Coleman, played by John Hensley. The only way Darren can stay in college is if he raises $878 in 24 hours. After selling all of his personal belonging and running out of other options, Darren decides to sell 50 ecstasy pills given to him by Coleman. Warning: my movie review contains plot spoilers.

I did not really enjoy this movie. First off, the movie had very low-budget quality. It seemed like an early nineties movie so I was very surprised when the DVD box cover said the movie was from 2006. Second the plot was boring and the movie just seemed to drag on forever. The lead actor was not very good. The movie would have been a lot better if they would have made John Hensley the lead character. Kristen Bell was good in her very small part. Her roommate was played by Nora Zehetner. I was slightly amused by the fact that they both acted in Heroes, just at different times. Seriously that was the only aspect of the movie that made me laugh.

Eddie Kaye Thomas was vaguely amusing as Ralphie, the lonely stock-trader who takes way too many ecstasy pills. Monica Keena has a bit part as a dominatrix who lives in her grandma's basement. Most of the situations seemed too contrived and forced. I almost gave up on the movie several times because it was just so boring. By the end of the movie I could have cared less if Darren gets the money or the girl.

The movie was also very un-original in some parts. Of course since it was a college-themed movie for teenagers and young adults there was the standard masturbation scene with the guy getting caught by a parent. And let us not forget the predictable running joke on parents thinking their son is gay and deciding to act cool with it. Very funny, not.

I give the movie 0 out of 5 stars. Fifty Pills is a waste of time.
