Fight the Depression of Fall and Winter Months

Jennifer Wright
Fall and winter are now upon us and along with those long months comes the rain, snow, and dreary gray days. I don't know about you, but when it's gray outside for a long time I begin to feel sluggish and tired. Below I have compiled several tips for fighting off the gray weather depression.

Drink Water

Curling up on the couch with a nice cup of hot chocolate is fine, but don't forget to drink water. It is a common mistake for people not to drink water when it is cold outside. The human body actually needs water even more when it's cold and snowy. It is important to keep our bodies hydrated all year round, not just when it's hot outside.

Exercise

When the weather outside is yucky, no one wants to go out for a jog or Sunday stroll. But, remembering to exercise will help your body and mind to beat the sluggishness that gray days can induce. There are lots of ways you can find to exercise inside or perhaps you should look into joining a gym. Personally, I do yoga and aerobic exercise on the Wii. The exercise doesn't have to be meant to lose weight, just enough to get your body moving and your heart rate up a little.

Get Outside

If the weather is permitting enough, try to get outside. Even if it's gray out you can still take a walk or go out and do something for a while, as long as it isn't pouring rain or snow. The fresh air helps to stimulate the body and mind.

Lighting

In the fall and winter it may help some to purchase some ultra violet lighting for inside your home. The ultra violet light simulate the ultra violet rays that come from the sun, and sunlight makes us happy, right?

Diet

As tempting as it is to sit down with that giant bowl of chili during these cold months, it is wise not to abuse our diet too much. Keep eating your summery salads and veggie trays each day. Fresh fruit and veggies do wonders for the body, if you eat too many carbohydrates it will contribute to the sluggishness and depression I mentioned earlier.

Hopefully these tips help you to beat the gray weather blues that many of us fight in the fall and winter months.
