Fighting Against Malaria in Third World Countries

Trying to Save Lives Around the World

Malaria has been an ever-growing problem in third world countries such as Africa and the fight has just begun. The problem is so horrible that Bill Gates donated $50 million to the cause. Bill Gates is well-known for his generous giving to good causes for many years now. He is a billionaire who made his fortune with the Microsoft Corporation. The money he donated goes to the Innovative Vector Control Consortium at Liverpool's School of Tropical Medicine and is a five year grant to do research on the topic.

Bill Gates isn't the only one getting involved. Singer John Mayer has also gotten involved by making a commercial urging people to donate to the fight against malaria. The commercial urges people to donate for purchases of mosquito nets for the people in these countries that are suffering from Malaria outbreaks. Mosquito nets can save many lives in Africa and other countries suffering from the same fate. Something as simple as a mosquito net can prevent a deadly disease so there is no reason that so many people should die from this disease.

Rwanda introduced indoor residual spraying for homes in 2007. Malaria is reported to be down by 60% due to this spraying and the use of nets. It is the hope that Rwandans will begin to understand the importance of using the sprays and nets in order to keep Malaria from striking. 1 million people from around the world are stricken to their death by Malaria every year. It is reported that 9 out of 10 of those people are Africans. That is a massive amount of people dying from a disease that can easily be prevented.

The disease is so widespread in some third world countries that there is a weeklong commemoration to spread awareness about the disease. Awareness is essential to get this problem under control. The citizens of the affected countries need to be made aware of the importance of prevention. People around the world need to be made aware of the problem and ways in which they can help prevent it for these people who are suffering from the affliction. If people are made more aware, there is a much better chance that we will gain control over this infectious disease. Although not every country has the problem of Malaria, we need to support and aid those countries that do have it.

Malaria doesn't have to be a deadly disease. In fact, it doesn't have to exist at all. Bill Gates saw the necessity of finding ways to prevent the further spread of Malaria and so has John Mayer. Both took different steps to help in the fight against Malaria. It is imperative that we all take a good look at the problem and try to aid where possible so that we can end this wretched disease that is claiming the lives of so many around the world.
