Fighting Back: Tales of Achievements from Diabetics

S. Ann
Just because the doctor has diagnosed you with having diabetes does not mean you have to give up the life you love. In fact, studies show exercise can only help the drugs in controlling your disease. There are many entertainers who still do their jobs and go through the daily rigors of having diabetes. In fact, it is quite amazing to see what some people with diabetes have done.

For instance, Ayden Byle is the only insulin dependent diabetic to have run across North America. Yes, it is possible for an insulin dependent diabetic to run when their feet are so susceptible to injuries. It seems an impossible and crazy feat. However, it has been accomplished. He is still alive and does a lot of work with his non-profit charity in the search for the cure for diabetes.

According to Diabetes Health, Scott Coleman also did something just as great as running across a country, in a different way. Instead of running, he swam. After doctors told him he had diabetes and exercise would help, he decided to pick up swimming again after 13 years. The swim was excruciating and caused Coleman to lose 15 pounds in 12 hours. However, he succeeded and was the first man with diabetes to ever swim the English Channel.

In a similar story, Raul Castillo, a 57 year old diabetic broke a world record. He swam for 24 hours, without interruptions. Diagnosed at the age of 45, his complications were so severe they required him to use a wheelchair. Those complications were damaging to the lifelong swimmer, as they were in his eyes and feet. But, thanks to a team of doctors, he was able to take his life back just a short time after being diagnosed.

In addition, young diabetic girls should not feel left out. There is a group of girls from southern California who all have juvenile diabetes. They call themselves the Pump Girls. They sing about the normal trials of a teenage girl's life including love, boys, and dancing. The group was founded in order give hope to other teens with juvenile diabetes.

So do not worry! Just because you've been diagnosed with diabetes, your life is far from being over. In fact, your new life could be just beginning! Having diabetes is not the end of your life. It can be just another reason to get it back under control.
