Your first step when starting to build up a virtual world presence is to consider how large or how small you want that presence to be. This will ultimately impact the amount of money you are spending for land, as well as the size of the buildings that you will need. Knowing that you are only interested in a small virtual world presence will make your initial setup as well as maintenance expenses much smaller, but if you decide that you are interested in a much larger presence you will need to budget a much larger amount of money towards the setup as well as maintenance expenses. The price of land can vary from as little as pennies, to as much as $1,000 upfront with monthly expenses running from a couple of mere dollars, to as much as $300 per month depending on the land size.
Once you have decided upon the approximate size of the virtual world presence that you are interested in it is time to start looking at how much it will cost to obtain the buildings that you need. For example, if you are needing a very large building because you are wanting to create a large presence you will need to set aside likely hundreds of dollars to create this. Not only will the buildings need to be purchased if you do not have building experience, but you will need to spend time actually putting it all together and ensuring that the final look is how you are planning it to be.
Because time costs money, this is something that should be accounted for in your financial plans. Not knowing exactly what you are looking at for time requirements can find you significantly underestimating what it would cost to create your virtual world presence. You should also consider that having your business buildings created especially for you will always increase the charges that you are paying significantly. Buildings will typically cost at a minimum of $15 to as much as thousands if you require a full sim build that is custom designed for your needs.
Remember to also take into account the costs for updating the avatars of each employee that is going to be in world representing your business. At a minimum, you should expect to spend $5 USD updating them, however this can easily rise to a much higher amount, as well as be kept a bit cheaper depending on exact requirements, needs and if you choose to have clothing created that is unique to your business. An example of this would be having uniforms created for employees that includes the company logo for instance.
