However, most of the programs take place a lot of system resource and require users to pay fee to use. I will introduce you "File Encryptor", a free and useful program to encrypt your file and prevent other people accessing it. One advantage of "File Encryptor" is it is very small, only about 135 KB. "File Encryptor" is compatible with all versions of Windows. You can download it here. "File Encryptor"'s main function is to protect shared sensitive information in the Internet.
After installed, "File Encryptor" will automatically appear on Windows Explorer. In order to encrypt a file from hard drive, right click on "Start" > Choose "Explore" > Locate the file you want to encrypt > Right click on the file > Pick "Encrypt". The main appearance of "File Encryptor" will appear. You have to put in your password in "Password" and "Confirm" section and click "Encrypt" to start the process. Wait until the program notices, "Done". Click "Close" to finish. The encrypted file will be in the same folder with the original file with the extension *.enc.
With this expansion, nobody can open the file without "File Encryptor" installed and your password. You can send the file through email or share with your friends in the Internet without being afraid that other people would use the file. When you need to use the file again, simply decrypt it. Right click on "Start" > Choose "Explore" > Locate the file you want to encrypt > Right click on the file > this time, pick "Decrypt" instead. Be notice that only the file with extension *.enc can be decrypted. A window asking for password will appear. Type in the suitable password and click "Decrypt". After the process, click "Done" and "Close" to finish. Now, you can use the decrypted file normally without any problem.
The disadvantage of "File Encryptor" is it is too "simple". You can only call out the main window of the program by encrypting some files. It has no other extra function besides encrypt and decrypt. In order to open the file, the receivers must also install "File Encrytor" into their computers. It would be impossible open the encrypted files when users forget the password. The program provides nothing like hints, questions to recover the password.
Nevertheless, the advantage of "File Encryptor" is it does not cost anything. As I experience, the encrypted file from "File Encryptor" is much smaller than the encrypted file from any other program.
