An M4A file extension is actually a MPEG-4 file which is an audio layer file format. Apple Corporation has come up with the MPEG-4 format for better streamlining of the video files and multimedia players like the Apple's Quick Time can effectively use this type of format. This type of format comes in a compressed form enabling storage of large amounts of video and audio files and reproducing them with high sound and picture precision. The MPEG-4 part 14 is a type of container format that makes it difficult to identify the various streams of audio, video and also the subtitles. To make the streamlining of the files better and effective, the M4A file extension was developed. This eliminated the confusion arising from MP4file extension, which consists of an audio or video formatting or in some cases both.

M4A file extension (MPEG 4 Audio) is a fairly new addition used in audio file formatting. It is similar to the MP3 files which are capable of holding a huge amount of data pertaining to songs and audio files. The performance of the M4A and MP4 is considerably more efficient in terms of quality and file size and has the added advantage of not needing any license or payment for the distribution and streamlining of the data in M4A format. In the case of an MP3 format you have to pay a certain amount as royalty for the data you circulate. This economical advantage makes the M4A file more favorable and further the quality of the audio is very excellent due to the better compression of the files.

For those who are not familiar with the latest updates in the new generation audio files, the difference between MP4 and M4A formats will not be easy to understand. Since both files represent the MPEG 4Audio format, it is rather pointless to use two formats for Audio. Basically the files that have M4A formatting are specially designed for audio files whereas the MP4 files may contain a MPEG 4 Audio or it may not be equipped with an audio format.

In case of MP 4, you can use MPEG4 audio and video file, video files alone or just the MPEG4 audio component. The M4A format is widely promoted by the Apple Computers as the users of MP4 can get mixed up with the characteristics it represents like audio/video, audio only or video only formats. To experience a high quality sound effect it is highly suggested that the M4A file extension be used.

Most of the present day audio players use the M4A or MP4 format for play back of audio files and these are highly compatible. The file extension is the major difference between the two formats, otherwise both are identical. If you have trouble with the file extension, you can configure it to the other format for a quality audio playback.
