Joe's Filling Station in Rexburg, Idaho doesn't pump gas, but rather serves filling, delicious, homemade American fare. You won't find it in the 2009 AAA TourBook nor even in the Rexburg Chamber of Commerce listing of local restaurants, oddly enough, but ask any of the 9,000 students or 8,000 residents in Rexburg where is a great place to eat, and you will likely get a strong recommendation for Joe's Filling Station.

Though Rexburg is just over five square miles in area, the small diner (slightly larger than a railroad car) is somewhat off the beaten path away from downtown, yet conveniently located for travelers just off just off US-20 and on ID-33 at 727 N 2nd E. Look for it a block or so north of Wal Mart and across the street, and next to Horkleys Self Service gas station.

When you first set eyes on Joe's Filling Station, it's not all that much to look at. Enter the building and you won't be able to stop looking at the antique signs, gas station memorabilia, and other interesting items that cover seemingly every square inch of the wall. When you do tear yourself away and take a look at the menu, you won't be disappointed.

On the dinner menu, typical American food is offered, but Joe's boasts that everything is homemade. Indeed, the fries were hot and crispy, the burger large and juicy, and the biscuits to die for. Even an ordinary fruit cup was anything but; half of a perfectly ripe melon filled with fresh strawberries was quite a deal at under $2.00. For dessert, check out the selection of individual size homemade pies.

Our waitperson was not only speedy, efficient, and aiming to please, but also a font of information about nearby national parks and places to visit. Whether you are headed north to the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park, east to the Grand Tetons National Park and Jackson Hole, or west to Craters of the Moon National Monument, all are within a three hour drive from Rexburg.

The city of Rexburg is home to Brigham Young University-Idaho and the Rexburg Idaho Temple, 125th temple of LDS (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) which was just completed in 2008. Adjacent to the university, the classic temple with a single, tall spire rises from the highest spot in Rexburg and faces the Grand Tetons. With over 57,000 square feet, the substantial temple appears to almost float over the city, especially at night when the exterior is completely lit.

So, if you are just passing through Rexburg on the way to any of the nearby national parks, attending the Idaho International Dance and Music Festival in July, or visiting the LDS university or temple, stop by Joe's Filling Station for a hearty, homemade meal. You will leave Rexburg with a satisfied smile on your face.
