Film Review: BLOOD MONKEY (2007)

Very little good can be said for this mediocre film Blood Monkey (2007) which plays as a bad mix on the film Congo (on a much lower budget) and a teen horror film. I love watching actor F. Murray Abraham chew on some scenery (and he does a whole lot of that here) but even this film borders on being beneath him.

The film concerns a group of interns who are lead into the unchartered jungle world by Professor Hamilton (Abraham) who has encountered a new and undiscovered world which just so happens to be inhabited by blood thirsty gorillas who previously killed off all of his original research team. Now the interns must find a way to escape Hamilton's maniacal grasps and find a way back to civilization before they become victim to the jungle itself.

The plot of the film is very simply and straight forward and the special effects are passable and maybe (now that I think about it) Abraham's crewing scenery is probably the best thing about the film because without his presence the film wouldn't even be watchable.

So many of these types of low budget films are produced that many of them have the exact same plot and story as the next one only they change the monster set loose in the film and the one name star that they hire to be in the film. This is a shame because we've come so far since the low budget days of Roger Corman (whose films were at least fun) that you'd think that even the most mundane of films would at least be competent. I say this knowing well that I continue to watch all these films hoping to come across that rare low budget gem that actually strives to be something better than its predecessors. This is not that film.
