Film Review: EYE of the BEAST (2007)

Giant Squid's Attack!

Kevin L. Powers
The worst type of giant sea monster film is the giant squid or octopus film because they all pale in comparison to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, so it comes as no surprise that Eye of the Beast (2007) is a subpar film. The story is very familiar to most films of the genre in which a small fishing town that relies on the fishing trade for business and survival is suddenly thrust into upheaval when the presence of a giant predator (this time a giant squid) suddenly threatens their way of life. Leading the charge is James Van Der Beek as Dan Leland, a researcher with NORA sent in to investigate why the town's fishing trade has dwindled.

Leland must team up with Katrina Tomas (Alexandra Castillo) to unite the local fishermen and the Native Americans (who both rely on the fishing industry to survive) in order to hunt down and destroy the giant squid before it kills any more of the locals. The cast does a suitable job with the otherwise pedestrian script but because it comes off as a PG-13 film it never goes for the jugular and is very timid (like '70s and '80s TV movies) The film was desperate need of a few jolts.

This type of tame horror film has become common place of the SyFy Channel and even though these films have a worthy cast they never seem to be more than the sum of their parts. Only recommended for fans of this genre (and fans of Van Der Beek).
