Film Review: THE LAST RESORT (2009)

With three writers on the screenplay (Nathaniel Bozen, Nathan Oliver, and Martina Papinchak) you'd think that the film The Last Resort (2009) who be at least something special especially since the film takes place in the exotic Mexican locale and has a group of beautiful women at its core. Let's just say that the film has an interesting concept that kind of falls flat about two thirds of the way in due to the fact that the story doesn't know where it wants to go.

A group of ladies on a Bachelorette weekend are robbed and left for dead in the middle of nowhere by some shady locals. One of them is shot and if they don't find shelter and help soon she may die. They find shelter at an old resort that has a history and the locals never go there especially at night because of nefarious going ons. It is not long before these women start to see and hear mysterious things that will take their minds to the edge of sanity that they might not be able to come back from.

There is nothing really new with the haunted house theme here (except it's really the whole resort) but director Brandon Nutt does add a little flair with the film by showing off his attractive cast (which is always a good thing with low budget films) despite the weak story. The film does has promise at first but then two thirds of the way in it cuts from the women trapped at the resort to the lone group member who didn't go on the trip with them. We don't really see what happens with the other girls as it cuts in the middle of their story (just when it was getting good) to go back to the other girl.

I wanted to like this film even at its basic and entertaining bone and there are a few moments that I actually do enjoy but the overall film is uneven and unfocused. At barely eighty minutes the film isn't too much a waste of time and the cast does a good job with what they've been given but that's not saying much unless you enjoy these types of low budget horror films.
