Film Review: SEA BEAST (2008)

Sea Monsters Rise Again!

Kevin L. Powers
Every once in a while there comes a sci-fi horror film that's not as bad as you're expecting it to be - Sea Beast (2008) is just one of those films. It's not flawless but it is highly entertaining and gets high remarks for the creature design and effects.

Corin Nemec is Will McKenna, a fisherman who just lost a man on his last trip out and who unexpectedly picked up a hitchhiker in the form of an undiscovered sea creature who hitches a ride back to civilization. It doesn't take long for the sea creature to repopulate its kind and start to make short meals of the populace. What makes them most dangerous is that they have a paralyzing venom and they love the human flesh. They also quickly start taking over and overrunning the place. Now this is not a film with new additions to the genre nor does it break any new ground but it is highly entertaining in that Anaconda (1997) way. This being said, the film has little for non-genre fans as they won't find anything worth watching the film for but for the genre fan this film has a charm all its own.

Low budget genre films are a dime a dozen and those worth mentioning don't come along very often never mind the fact that most with sea monsters pale in comparison to Jaws (1975). This film has a unique monster and doesn't play it safe with the violence so in a way it is worth mentioning.
