Film Review: Slither (2006)

Review:
Campy, sci-fi, cheesy, horror, can't be happening here feast for the eyes. Slither brings all of the elements from these types of films and entombs them in a candy coated wrapper. There are themes adapted from other more notable films. Think of it as Alien meets The Blob with a side order of the original Night of the Living Dead. Slither is a smorgasbord for the not-so-faint at heart. Buckets of blood and piles of guts are on the menu in this farcical tale.

Our hero in this sampling of schlock film fare is Bill Pardy played by Nathan Fillion (of Serenity fame). He is the sheriff in this small town besieged by alien slugs looking to transform humankind into something a bit different. Slither is more comedy than horror. Granted there are some pretty gruesome scenes, but it is the subtle humor which really impressed me. For example, the scenes with the mountain of a woman who just can't get her fill of food asking for piece of that possum on the ground next to her. Starla asking her husband what's wrong and him replying nonchalantly telling her he must have been stung by a bee. There are many more situations which use this technique.

On the gruesome side of the coin, the film was overdone but not really. I felt like being at the carnival watching the side show freaks perform. You know it isn't real, but you're nonetheless entertained. Grant Grant played by Michael Rooker is the central beast. It was fun watching him slowly devolve from an upstanding member of society to a grotesque multi-limbed carnivorous monster bent on converting all humans into one of his own kind. Much like the Alien films, but this one should not be taken serious. Fillion and fellow cast members do a capable job in portraying their characters. They perform with a sense of cohesion which makes the story enjoyable to watch.

In conclusion, I would very much recommend Slither to anyone with a dark sense of humor and the stomach to handle some hideous distortions of the human condition. If you are in the mood for some silly over-the-top horror, Slither should satisfy your appetite. Even if you do not have these inclinations, I still suggest you give this one a chance. And as Dan Aykroyd's character from the 1992 film Sneakers said "cattle mutilations are up."

Mike's Rating: 8 of 10 Slime Trails (Enjoyable little film)
MPAA Rating: Rated R for strong horror violence and gore, and language
Running Time: 95 minutes

Born circa 1967 in South Florida when going to the movies as a family was a luxury, my earliest memory of seeing a film in a theatre was a double feature showing The Longest Yard and The Groove Tube.  View profile

This is an outrageous, screamingly funny movie that I thoroughly enjoyed. A fun movie for a dreary, dark winter afternoon, but would also work very well at a midnight screening. Thanks for reminding me how much I enjoyed this.
