Saw-Not only is this the grossest and most violent film around what in the world are people so fascinated with the gore and graphic violence of this movie looking at people getting cut up like meat. Everyone has endured the first, second, and third, but there's a limit to the gore and the brutal, graphic language and violence since part 4 is now coming out. It seems like every year they come out with a new Saw movie since it wasn't even 2 years ago that Saw 3 was in the theater around Halloween. This one needs to be put to rest since someone on Associated Content had written an article about why the series needed to be put to rest and I can't blame her because the series is played out since it should have ended at 3 and not progressed into a 4. Hopefully this is the last one because you can only take so much of the graphic violence and language after a certain point.
Friday the 13th-This series should had not gone past 3 because it has gotten repetitive with the same predictable storylines of a bunch of stupid white kids going to a summer camp and coming into the story about it's most famous attendee Jason Voorhies and then that's when the slaughter comes into play. In part 3 you see the flashbacks from the first 3 films and getting you up to speed for the 4th which is where the story continues with the same predictable storylines and the same level of violence as seen in the past movies, but Jason X was the last straw because it had clearly been the end of the series coming and it shouldn't have even gotten to part ten because 6 films ago the story got played out and Jason should be retired from the horror film circuit because people have now gotten tired of the same storylines in the films. It was clear when the movie Jason vs. Freddy came out that the series was done for good.
Halloween-This is another series that has really gotten to be predictive as well because it's just like the Friday the 13th series since the character Michael Myers is tailored after Jason Voorhies, but after so many movies it too has become repetitive and predictable. It is a matter of time before they do a follow up with Michael Myers going against another horror villain like one in Saw. There has to be a time to just close the chapter and move on. It was good when they were out, but after a point the storylines do get repetitive and the generation that watched these films have grown up and had kids of their own and their taste in movies had changed.
Nightmare on Elm Street-This one also needed to be put to rest since it was actor Robert Englund who played Freddy Kreuger through all the NOE films and he wasn't doing anymore after the last one since they paid him a chunk of change to come back and do the Jason vs. Freddy movie and it was then that this film closed the chapter to both FT13 and NOE film series since Englund felt that the series had become repetitive and he wanted to explore other roles instead of the same one he played through 5 films. There was a beneficial side to that it made him a household name since he had his breakout role on the 80s defunct series V. It was a great run, but it's time to give it a rest.
Alien-This is another one that needed to be put to rest because how long can you see Sigourney Weaver killing the same damn thing over and over again. Weaver must have gotten tired of doing the movie since the first one came out in 1977. Many celebrities who became overnight stars due to the success of a film can get sick of doing the same role over and over again. It finally ended when they did Alien vs. Predator that was a send off to this series since it didn't have Sigourney Weaver in it this time. Unfortunately the series has one more blow with Alien vs. Predator: Requiem that is coming out December 27th, but seriously though enough already.
Predator-This movie series has now ran its course because with the impending Alien vs Predator: Requiem this series has taken a final turn to end this series since it lost momentum when Arnold Schwartzenegger didn't come back after the first one. This film just basically needed to be shelved and not redone ever again. You would get tired of seeing the same storyline again and again of military personnel in the jungle trying to escape some 6 foot something alien that's running loose in the jungle
Night of the Living Dead-This was the mother of all series since you could only take so much of the gore after the 1968 version along with the subsequent sequels and prequels and remakes. They needed to stop after the last one before the remake of Night of the Living Dead since the remake had more gore and was more graphic than the original film 39 years earlier. This needed to be shelved since George Romero had worn this out to no end and now the generation that grew up on the movies are not interested in zombies anymore.
Star Trek-This needed to stop a long time ago when they decided to use the original 60s cast for the movies and then switched over to the cast from STNG (Star Trek: Next Generation) and made a series of movies with cameos from the original cast. Star Trek is a great show, but I think they needed to leave it alone after First Contact and Ressurection since audiences would have grown weary of the whole Star Trek franchise altogether.
Scary Movie-This movie series is past the point of tired since they're releasing part 5 in 2008, and many have grown tired of the persistent silliness that the movie series has been notoriously famous for and this is pretty much going to be a straight to DVD movie since it wasn't even a year and a half ago that part 4 came out. This tells you right there this movie series should have been shelved a long time ago since it's played out. The audiences who come to see the movies can only deal with too overly silly characters to a point with cameos by known celebrities before it just gets to be too much after a while.
Rocky-At some point Sylvester Stallone has to come to realization that he's not 25 anymore and that this classic boxing film has worn out it's place in Hollywood since after the last one it was time for Rocky to hang up his gloves and retire. This too had become repetitive following the story of a Philadelphia boxer rise from the ghetto the boxing ring and fame. Many who grew on these movies too were a bit disappointed at the final installment of the Rocky series Rocky Balboa. The story had to end sometime and it was time for the series to hang it up and retire.
Iron Eagle-This series has exhausted all military movies dealing with the Navy and flying off aircraft carriers to no end. Louis Gossett Jr. is a talented actor by far and don't get me wrong Iron Eagle is a good movie, but it's pretty much become redundant at this point with the sequels after part 2. If they decide to do a part 5 they better pay Gossett what he's worth because most stars don't come back after the second or third installment of a film. Yet the series is tired and needed to stop a long time ago.
These are the movies that needed to be shelved a long time ago because they've all become repetitive and predictable and doesn't sit well with audiences meaning the studios are in fact wasting their time making movie after movie and when the original stars get tired of doing the same role over and over this explains why many of the films go straight to DVD because when box office ticket sales don't reflect what they expect it's a loss they end up taking. It's sad, but when you start becoming repetitive with the same movie over and over again people do get sick of acting in them and also it's not sitting well with the audience who pay to come see these movies as well.
You would think Hollywood would be a little more creative in the movies they make instead of going past a 3rd sequel since it's getting "sequeled" out and at some point the movies after 2 are repetitive and predictable and it's not going to do the studios any good to keep wasting money making repeated sequels. Something has to give here because sequels are being overdone to the point people don't want to see the movie anymore.

Post a CommentInteresting article. I happen to love sequels... as long as the creators can exercise their imaginations. This is certainly very well written, I'll give it that much.
As a writer who wrote for Star Trek & Deep Space Nine, I must totally disagree with Star Trek on your list. Sure, a few of the movies are weak, but overall most are entertaining, with even a few classics. The new Star Trek movie coming out in December 2008 promises a great cast with a big budget. It remains to be seen how well received it will be, but Star Trek is far more flexible & interesting than some one note slasher or weak juvenile comedy. The science, drama & philosophy can reach far beyond what has come before in the old TV shows & films and continue to fire our imaginations and excite our senses.
i would have to agree to a point i mean yeah most of the first movies of any series are good and just because they do good doesnt mean the tenth installment of it will do any better nor should movies be remade especially since most of the movies being remade were great movies even if some of the effects were cheap. the fact movies are being remade and sequals are being thrown out every other months proves theres no originality left let some new up and coming talent have a shot at it. As far as the violence and gore goes i dont think theres enough also anyone who thinks saw is a gory movie is sheltered there are way more graphic films out there anyone ever see peter jacksons dead alive a very cool zombie like movie the most graphic scenes are in the end the guy takes out a roomfull of the undead with a lawnmower! i thought it was cool something new instead of just running and hiding from the zombies
Hollywood keeps churning out insipid sequels because insipid and easily entertained people pay to see the films. Hollywood goes where the money can be found. People DO want to see violence, gore, hate, destruction, chaos, murder and mayhem on screen and they will pay big bucks for it. They even buy the DVD's and take those home for the kiddies. Then of course they sit back and lament the state of the world and how evil and violent it is.
I liked National Treasure -- it had one explosion, no profanity, no nudity, a good story, nice pacing. Wish there were more films made like that -- not sequels per se, but of the same caliber instead of the tripe that appeals to the half formed mind of a 13 yr old boy (which is what Hollywood most like to make.)
Maybe if the number if fimls that come out per month was tined down a bit, the same thematic ideas would be less-stressed. The way I see it, it looks like this:less movies=less scramble to find new shallow variations to other great pieces.
But Scary Movie has been unique. It's not creating other copy-cat movies ou tof it. So it can stay out there.
Agree 100%, and Hollywood can start by not making another I Am Legend. Enough is enough, when after three tries they still can't get it right, and drift even further away from the source material. And please, someone stop Nicolas Cage from sequeling anymore of his thickheaded dumb films. We don't need anymore National Treasures, let alone more Ghost Riders. Blech.
Actually, maybe they should make a movie that combines ALL of them, e.g., Rocky is captured by Aliens and transported to meet the Enterprise crew on Star Trek, and Freddie Kruger gets aboard and....
Nah, you're right. They should stop making them. And NOW.
Agreed, agreed, agreed! Thank you!!! Let's give some of us, who actually have new ideas, a chance to break out and stop with the rehashing of old blockbusters! And no more movies based on t.v. shows either!
I notice taht almost all of these films are horror films. It is not that Hollywood needs to stop making these, it is that Hollywood needs to think about these movies from differest angles. Instead of remaking them, or retelling them, they should be reinvented. They shoudl come up with new angels.
AVP, for example, was a great idea. It put the two types of characters in a new situation. There should not be a sequal. What they should have donw was figure out a new idea for the franchises as a whole.

In 10 years or so, you know they'll do remakes of all of these. They even do remakes of the remakes now (;
