Films for the Whimsical, Peculiar & Odd Individual: Bob Gosse's "Niagara Niagara" (1997)

Niagara Niagara is the 1997 film from director Bob Gosse, starring Robin Tunney as Marcy and Henry Thomas as Seth. Michael Parks, Clea Duvall, John Ventimiglia, Stephen Lang and Shawn Hatosy also co-star.

The film surrounds two outsiders who meet while both are shoplifting in a convenience store. Marcy has lived most her life as an outcast due to having Tourette's syndrome, while Seth is estranged from society due to an abusive father. Connecting on a level that only outsiders can, they impulsively embark on a trip to Canada in order to retrieve a black bobby-head doll for Marcy's eccentric collection. Along the way, Marcy's condition worsens, and due to misunderstanding from other people, the couple unwillingly becomes fugitives on the run.

Besides being a road movie with an excellent soundtrack, this film was unique as an unconventional love story. Tunney (who also worked alongside Michael Parks in 1997's Julian Po) is fantastic as the charming Marcy, and this is probably one of the best performances of her career due to her depiction of Tourette's syndrome. (Rob Morrow did a great job directing and starring in 2000's Maze, also about Tourette's for those interested). Thomas, who you might remember as Elliot in 1982's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, is equally terrific as the humble but capable Seth.

Niagara Niagara is a quirky little romance wrapped up in an overall beautiful film. It will stay with you long after it's over.
