1. "K-Pax" Director: Iain Softly. Actors: Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges
Genre: Drama with a bit of sci-fi mystery
The story follows a man, Prot (Spacey), and his journey through a mental institution after he is found in Grand Central Station. Booked into the hospital, due to delusion, he manages to help other patients around him. A psychologist in the hospital, Dr. Powell (Bridges) attempts to aid Prot with his delusion that he is an alien visiting from another planet. The planet in question is named K-Pax and Prot stuns doctors and scientists alike with his knowledge and conviction. Prot leaves them with questions of whether he really is insane and what is actually true.
The movie is fascinating. Spacey's acting is an incredible feat to behold as he draws us into his delusions. The watcher finds themselves considering reality and possibility as the movie twists and turns. Every detail is executed perfectly.
2. "Religulous" Director: Larry Charles Actors: Bill Maher as presenter
Genre: Documentary/Comedy
Bill Maher takes a comic stand on religion, using his wit and humor to interview religious individuals. The result is a stomach-ache from laughter but also a deep insight into the functions and roles of religion in our society. Maher uses his comic genius to lure out incredible answers and astonishing reactions. In this movie Bill Maher takes on the opinions of Christians, Jews and Muslims, allowing them to share their often surprising replies. If you're looking for an excellent documentary this is most certainly the perfect watch, with just the right combination of shock and comedy you'll be laughing and deeply concerned all at the same time. A unique experience.
3. "Notes On a Scandal" Director: Richard Eyre Actors: Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett
Genre: Drama
A new teacher, Sheba Hart (Blanchett), is taken under the wing of a strange colleague, Barbera Covett (Dench). The friendship begins to take a strange turn after Sheba is caught sleeping with one of her students. Barbera uses the scandal to pull strings in Sheba's life, developing almost a strange obsession with her.
If you enjoy a movie with a superb villain, this is it. Dench plays the role of a treacherous older woman with strange and unusual motives to her actions. The audience at once feels pity for her lonely nature but aware of her questionable acts. It is a profound story detailing the obliteration of a woman's life and family.
4. "The Boat that Rocked" Director: Richard Curtis Actors: Bill Nighy, Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Genre: Comedy
The movie bases itself around a ship broadcasting pirate radio during the 1960s. The movie covers the offbeats antics that happen aboard the ship: sex, pride, competition, love, betrayal, as well as the musical appreciation of the time period. As the ship aims to broadcast rock music day and night, the government plans against them to have them removed.
A hilarious triumph on the part of British Humor. It's great to finally find a comedy with interesting, edgy and clever dialog. Though there are a few rare scenes that lose your attention or seem unnecessary. The cast is excellent, every single actor lending a unique and humorous atmosphere to the different scenes.
