Final Goodbye

John Howard
We stepped outside at half to two,
Looking above at a silvery moon.
A gleam in her eye, probably mine too,
We held hands and promised soon.

Sometime, when things die down,
When we both have jobs that pay a bit.
We'll buy a house in this small town,
Raise a family, and rest a bit.

Glancing back at the sky, I heard a sigh,
A simple answer, "I want that too."
Walking back inside, I said goodbye,
Waved at her parents, and I went outside.

A cool breeze hit, drifting the winter snow,
Sparkles danced upon the flakes.
Angles eyes from that winter sky,
Somewhere from Heaven, I'd someday go.

And as the years passed, we both grew in age,
Bought that house from long ago,
Raised three kids, beneath a silvery moon,
Who watched every step with a lover's touch.

Dressed in black, my hair a dark gray,
I dreaded being here on this very day.
The casket, dark amber, I let out a sigh,
The end of our time, our final goodbye.
