Final Rest

Susan Owens
It is dark here beneath this lonely square
An erected rock standing tall
What is meant as a remembrance
Should serve as a warning to all

Be careful gentle soul
Be mindful of where you go
For this life of which you have only one
As soon as it has started, it will be done
Be certain that the things you do
Are proper and true
Or they will be your true haunting

Bite your cheek
Hold your tongue
Say not another word
Your voice will ring on like a sounding gong
And it will be your haunting

Beneath this dirt I lay
As still as can be
I am motionless
I can not speak

I am bound forever by death
It's grip paralyzes me
I can not move
I can not breath
I can not scream

My mind is all that I have
It shall keep me company
All my memories
Continuously unfolding before me
It is all a dream
It has to be
This can not be my eternity!

I did some good
Now let me think
Oh, no it was selfishness who motivated me
Now let me just think
There was a time
I am sure
When my actions and my mind
Both were pure

How could this be
That the evil in me ruled so well
Like a thief
Quietly, it consumed me
That evil it is a disease
It spread throughout
Swallowing me whole

Dust upon my shoulder
Years gone by
I get no older
This tiny little box
Oh, how I hate it so
Never drafty,
Only cold
I can not feel my toes
These walls, they are my prison
No hope do I find with in them

All that you shall find
Is what the bugs have left behind
I can not feel them
Nor do I see them
But they are there
This much I am sure

I heard them gnawing long ago
Through wood and stone they drove
Pressing forward like an army
Never stopping night or day
Closer and closer they came
Until, alas one day it had ended

It is dark here beneath this lonely square
An erected rock standing tall
What is meant as a remembrance
Should serve as a warning to all
