Find 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature Winner Herta Müller's Work in English

Joan Edens
2009 Nobel Prize in Literature winner, Herta Müller may have kept a fairly low profile outside of Germany over the course of her career, but her works are about to become required reading around the world. In awarding Herta Müller the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy released the justification that, "who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed." Ms. Müller was a victim of persecution and censorship in Romania, the land of her birth, before emigrating to Germany in 1987. Her works chronicle in flowing, novel form Ceausescu's dictatorship, censorship, corruption and oppression.

Five of her twenty-some published books have been translated to English, to date: The Appointment and The Land of Green Plums, published by Metropolitan Books of MacMillan; Nadirs and Traveling on One Leg (Hydra Books), published by the University of Nebraska Press; and The Passport, published by Serpent's Tail. If you have not had the opportunity to read the books by Herta Müller that have been translated to English, you have several options available.

I found Green Plums unreadable and agree with Muller that the award should have gone to Peter Handke.

Although I may not obtain a book or books of the lady, I just know she went through some terrible experiences. So many people have, thanks to such totalitarian regimes.
