Classroom style learning is good; however it is necessary for you to have real world hands on education if you want to feel comfortable on the water. The best is a mix of both classroom and on the water training to give you a rounded knowledge to boating. Don't even consider a program that doesn't have in water experience.

You have to make sure that the boating school you choose is accredited. To make sure you are getting the best instruction they should be accredited through the American Sailing Association (ASA) or US Power Squadron. With the ASA certification you can be certain that you are receiving high class instruction from some of the top people in the field. Graduates from ASA certified schools can travel in exotic locales without having a captain. This saves a lot of money if you were planning a trip to the Virgin Islands because captains are expensive.

Look for a boating school that offers programs that you want to learn. Make sure you are getting the necessary experience for you to feel comfortable and only pay money to an accredited school.
