Find a Good Boating School

Jim Posey
Boating is one of those activities that, though fun, can be hazardous. Boating is very similar to driving a car, once you know what you're doing it can be very relaxing but if you don't know what you're doing it will be dangerous for you to be out on the water, for yourself and other boaters.

That is why finding a good boating school is so important. Without the right instruction it can be difficult for you to be able to adapt to a marine vehicle. When you are looking at a boating school it is important to find one that is offering the programs that you will use so you fell that upon graduation you will be completely comfortable to be able to take the reigns. There are many different types of boating programs available catering to many different types of budgets, skill level, and the type of boating that you will be interested in.

Your first decision, when considering boating schools, is what type of boating you will be doing. For example, learning how to kayak will require very different instruction then sailing, obviously. If you don't know the name of the style of boating that you will be doing, use the type of boat in reference with the course description to make a good guess of what type of boating you will be doing.

Always make sure you are getting a boating school with on the water experience. Some boating schools only have classroom learning to teach fundamentals and principles related to boating. Classroom style learning is good; however it is necessary for you to have real world hands on education if you want to feel comfortable on the water. The best is a mix of both classroom and on the water training to give you a rounded knowledge to boating. Don't even consider a program that doesn't have in water experience.

You have to make sure that the boating school you choose is accredited. To make sure you are getting the best instruction they should be accredited through the American Sailing Association (ASA) or US Power Squadron. With the ASA certification you can be certain that you are receiving high class instruction from some of the top people in the field. Graduates from ASA certified schools can travel in exotic locales without having a captain. This saves a lot of money if you were planning a trip to the Virgin Islands because captains are expensive.

Look for a boating school that offers programs that you want to learn. Make sure you are getting the necessary experience for you to feel comfortable and only pay money to an accredited school.
