Find Out If a Chihuahua is Right for You

Are you planning to get a new dog or a first dog? You will need to read about them to see if the dog you choose is going to be a good pick. Many dog owners make the mistake of buying a dog without knowing anything about the breed they are going to buy and making the decision solely on the looks of the dog. The breed of the dog although not determinant, is an important factor that influences the behavior of your dog. If you want a calm dog for example, you are by no means going to be satisfied if you buy a boxer because boxers are extremely playful and active.

In this article I'm going to focus in just one breed: the Chihuahua. Many people choose this dog because they think they are cute or because they are small, but there are other things you need to know before you decide to make a Chihuahua your next pet. The most noticeable attribute in a Chihuahua is its size. They are the smallest dogs and measure from 6 to 9 inches tall with a weight of about 6 pounds only. They usually have short hair and come in a variety of colors being brown the most common.

Chihuahuas can be delicate dogs. Because of their size, their bones are thin so you should never play rough with them. In terms of personality, they are very playful and energetic. They love to play with anyone and to run like crazy all over the house. They are also very attached to people once they get to know them and hate being left alone. When they are alone they make a mess with everything they can to express their disgust; they turn paper into shreds and tear any piece of thrash available. They need a lot of attention, so if you are a busy person who is not at home often, you need to consider buying a more independent breed.

Chihuahuas make good inside dogs because they don't require a lot of grooming. They have pretty short hair and they don't shed a lot, so your furniture and carpet are going to stay clean for longer periods of time and you won't need to bathe them often; once a month will be sufficient. Another thing to consider is that because of their size, they have a lot of surface area and lose heat rapidly; this means they get cold easily, so they need to be kept in a warm environment. One thing to note is that Chihuahuas unlike German Shepherds or Dobermans are not too bright. They are kind of dumb so they could be difficult to train.

A good owner of a Chihuahua would be an adult without Children and with a lot of time to spare with his dog. The reason is because Chihuahuas require attention and are very fragile and nervous, so having kids would be a problem. Keep the information above in mind if you want to get a Chihuahua and make sure this dog is right for you before making a purchase.
