Dressing up is one of the main reasons we celebrate Halloween. We dress ourselves up, our children, so why not our four legged friends as well! When finding a Halloween costume for ourselves, one thing seems to flash in our minds over and over again, "Do not spend too much! You are only wearing this once"!! This should ring true for our pets as well. Not only are they going to wear it once, they will not ever remember they wore it! Thanks goodness for large chain retailers who are finally getting the hint that, yes, your American Bulldog looks adorable as a ladybug.
One of the first stops to finding a frightening frock for your pet should be, surprisingly, Joann's Fabrics. This is a nationwide chain that once specialized in fabrics and notions. Recently, they have everything from garden accents to, gasp, pet costumes. The prices are very reasonable. For merely $12.00 you can have your pup dressed up as a head surgeon, fireman/firewoman, angel, or cowboy. Sizes available from xs-l.
The obvious, but overpriced, option is Petsmart. You can dress your pooch as Batman for $25.00. Other choices include "Dog"-ula, a frog, ladybug, elephant, and a cow, all for $15.00. They also have less invasive costuming ideas such as Halloween collars starting at $5.00, as well as witch hats for the same price, provided that your pet will actually will keep a hat on their head. And for the most low maintenance of all dogs and cats, spend $4.50 on one of their Halloween bandannas and call it a night. Costume sizes start at xs and go up to an xl.
Target, the store that has it all, has diversified itself to offering a number of pet products, one of them being Halloween costumes. While the selection is minimal and a bit pricey, the costumes are unique and just as cute as can be. A "hot dog" costume, which is a strap on hot dog with the aforementioned phrase stitched on it, goes for $20.00. For the females, a darling cheerleading outfit with pom-poms is $20.00. The cutest of them all would have to be the "Lil Bandito" costume, which consists of a sombrero and a Mexican poncho, costing $20.00 as well. Sizing starts at an xs and goes up to an xl, in some cases.
Whatever you decide to dress your pet up as for Halloween, make sure you choose a costume that your pet will be comfortable in. Also, be sure to measure your pet before seeking a costume. Measure from the base of their neck to the base of their tail. Measuring their girth around the middle is a safe bet as well. All costumes will have sizing charts matched to measurements on the back of their packaging. All of the aforementioned stores are all located in the Crossroads shopping area in Cary, NC. Good luck and Happy Howl-een!
