Wild and Woolly Video has been around since March of 1997 when they opened with an inventory of 300 hard to find videos. Now they have an inventory of over 20,000 titles and over 19,000 members. Over the last ten years, they've become a favorite in Louisville video rental. They've won the LEO(Louisville Eccentric Observer) Reader's Choice Awards for best video store the last five years in a row. This Louisville video rental store has also been featured on the television shows Louisville Tonight Live and the Fox 41 Morning Show. They've also been featured in the Courier Journal and Louisville Magazine.
The store specializes in more eclectic categories such as bikers, gangs, zombies, and mockumentaries. They also have hard to find titles, obscure and weird films, kung fu classics, horror, foreign, film noir, adult, shorts, documentaries and silent films. An array of locally made films can also be rented. Wild and Woolly Video is also a good spot to buy previously viewed videos, hard to find boxed sets, collectible or special editions. Staff members mark some of their favorite movies with stickers that say "recommended by _________" and that adds a personal touch.
Wild and Woolly Video does more than rent videos. They also host events such as the Big Bone Art Show. Recently The Big Bone Art Show set up a a movie themed art show and displayed different artist's works in the store so patrons could view and buy the artwork as they perused videos. They also had George Romero stop in once to sign autographs and answer questions. George Romero was director of the popular cult classic Night of the Living Dead Movies. These are some of the reasons this is a great Louisville movies spot.
If you'd like to make sure they have a title you're interested in before stopping in, you can browse their online category. By the end of 2007, the Louisville video store hopes to begin mail rentals, which will allow visitors to their website to choose their video online and receive it in the mail. They currently have a survey on their site asking for suggestions on the best way to arrange their mail rental system.
Wild and Woolly video is part of a local movement called "Keep Louisville Weird" which is a group of small independently owned businesses that are banding together to encourage people to support locally owned and operated businesses that make Louisville unique.
