Finding African-American Genealogy Information for Charlotte Residents

Pat Anthony
African-American genealogy details are available online for Charlotte residents and others. There are many sites that offer genealogy details for most states. However, having one that is specific to the needs of the African-American community narrows the field for many of us.

African-American genealogy details for Charlotte residents are easier to find now that new sites are available. Links are listed at the end of this article.

One site that has many records about African-American genealogy is AfriGenea.com. This site assists with death records and birth records. Many people did not have what today would be considered an official certificate for births and deaths. However, records found in family bibles and books are often included to provide online details.

Inventory records of slaves and family members were used at one time to show a man's wealth. A man who had a wife and slaves was considered more financially stable than a man who did not own slaves or have a wife.

As insulting as it may seem today, it became the practice early in slavery for owners to give the slaves their last name. This explains the last names not sounding correct at times. For instance, an Irish surname for an African-American family.

Remember that African-American genealogy sites will be updated from time to time. Don't give up if you don't see what you want the first few times you visit such sites.

African-American records are also available through the local library. If you are not sure where to begin, someone at the library will help you.
