Finding Answers About the Health Care Reform

Ebie Harris
Months after the health care reform bill was passed we are finally finding answers to our questions. Under this new bill, passed under Obama's Administration, millions of Americans will receive necessary health care without further costs to their wallets.

Last week it was revealed that preventive health care will be available at no out-of-pocket expense for millions. For those who have a new health care plan they will not have to pay co-pays or meet deductibles for preventive health care needs. For millions this could make the difference between going to the doctors and not being able to afford to go to the doctors.

Preventive health care is a major goal of the Obama Administration. The theory behind these new bills are if you catch a health problem early on the outcome is not only better for your health but for your wallet as well. Trying to cure something is costly whereas prevention is the key.

Under these new health care requirements, health care plans must cover preventive services to their members without a co-pay.

These fall under four broad categories:

Screenings and Conditions

Tests including breast and colon cancer screenings will be performed. Tests for diabetes will be offered. A variety of counseling options will be available; from weight-loss issues to help for those wishing to quit smoking.

Routine Vaccines

Parents will no longer have to worry; their children will receive the necessary childhood shots. Adults will be eligible to receive boosters for their own childhood shots. Popular vaccines, such as the tetanus vaccine, will be available to those who need it.

Pediatric Health

Children will be covered by their insurance company for all childhood well checks. Routine vision and hearing tests will be readily available.

W omen's Health

Annual screenings for woman's health issues will be offered.

Recently in the news we are being informed about all these great plans for preventive health care.

We must keep in mind though everything comes at a cost, even if we do not see it at first glance. There is no way to offer "free" preventive health care. Most of us will see the raise in the amount we pay for our insurance premiums. Exact costs at this time are still under discussion; but we will at least see an increase of a few percentage to our existing premiums.

For millions of Americans the co-pay, not necessarily the overall premium, is preventing them from seeking medical help. For many households it is harder to come up with the co-pay for your family then to have the actual insurance payment taken out of your weekly paycheck. With everything in life, insurance is no exception to the give and take rule. We give and they keep taking.

At least we are finally finding answers to some of our questions.
