Finding a Balance Between Kids and Work

Kathryn Mitschelen
Finding a balance between work and kids can be stressful. Sure there are tips galore about being organized, saying no to people, etc. that can help your life run more smoothly. But the fact is, being a mom (or dad) and trying to get the kids to school and yourself to work on time is almost impossible some mornings. Or trying to make dinner and help with homework or baths is a near killer. The thing that always makes it more bearable is humor.

I can still remember the morning 'hairbrush' incident clear as day, though it happened almost two years ago. My husband was working a night shift and wasn't home yet for the morning, I was running a bit late and I couldn't find a hairbrush to get my daughter's hair untangled. Nor could I find a comb, pick, or anything else for that matter. She was still half in her pajamas and half in her 'real clothes' as she called them at the time, and the precious minutes were ticking by. I ran into her messy, tornado-like room and looked around. That's when I saw it. A My Little Pony brush. Why not? It brushes pony tails, it can surely brush my daughter's hair.

In moments like that, when you're brushing your daughter's hair with a teeny toy brush while trying to put your shoes on and rinse with mouthwash, you realize you either see the humor in trying to find a balance between home and work, or you have a breakdown. I choose the humor, and it works everytime.
