Finding Balance Between Life and Work

You Can Sleep when the Kids Are Grown

That's one of the funniest jokes I have heard in a long time. "Work-life balance"! Why don't we go looking for the elusive unicorn and slay dragons at the same time? Actually, the unicorn might be easier. I think I saw one run across the road in front of me after leaving my 12-hour shift at the ER and driving 40 miles to make the first game of my daughter's basketball tournament. The unicorn actually stopped and looked at me and said, "You look tired." And then he jumped over the fence and disappeared among the tumbleweeds.

Basketball games. Work. Football games. Work. Track meets. Work. Dinner. Work. Marriage? Marriage?? Oh, heck, I have to try to fit that in somewhere, too! Now I've got to rework my schedule!

After all the miles, text messages, emails, notes, tags and blown kisses, there are moments that are heavenly. For me, housework will always be there. Just enjoy the moment that you're in. The hug after the game. The sandwich at the kitchen counter. We don't live in a Norman Rockwell world so quit trying to force your family into his photos. Create your own version and it's way easier to live up to your standards. The kids are clean. The house is most of the time. You have what you need. There can never be too many hugs and "I love yous". Just respect each other and know that everyone has 'important stuff' to do. Love deeply. And most importantly, you can sleep when your kids are grown.
