Finding and Buying a Camper

What is the Right Camper for You and Your Family?

Meg Bartlett
The Big Three - Camper Types

Most campers will fit into one of three categories, motor-home, fifth wheel camper, or travel trailer. Each kind has its own special appeal. Some folks prefer the motor home because it is, hands down, the most pleasant roadway experience.

Other families like the fifth wheel camper because when it's parked they can still motor around in their vehicle. The fifth wheel models also boast high ceilings for more luxurious space.

The travel trailer is probably the most traditional model. In this category you can count pop-ups right through to 30' trailers. Travel trailers tow on the bumper versus a fifth wheel, where the hitch rides inside the truck bed.

Most Important Features

It's a good idea to hold a family meeting and get everyone's perspective on the features because campers, new and used, come with so many different features. You'll want to talk about the layout, the kitchen, and the sleeping arrangements.

When your family is young, sleeping accommodations are important because you will not only have room for your family but friends are welcome companions on camping trips. Do you have pets? Some folks take their pets with them when they camp and you'll need a place for the cat or dog to sleep too.

The kitchen is obviously important because all your meals will be prepared there. It is a good idea to be sure the camper has a microwave, in addition to the standard stove top and oven. Most RVs have refrigerators, but not too big. You may want to talk about supplementing with coolers.

Layout is based on personal preference. Some families want more common space for eating and visiting, while others like extra space in the bedroom, bunkroom, or even bathroom. The best way to get a real feel for the layout options is to walk through as many models as you can stand. You can also interview friends and family who already have a camper - what do they like or dislike about their camper's layout?

Stay on Budget

Before you step into a dealership or camper lot, know what you can afford to spend. Once you start looking at the beautiful units you'll be tempted to spend more than you originally planned. Resist the temptation and stay on budget. After all, you can always upgrade down the road.

The price range on campers is enormous; new and used campers are priced into the six figure range. Rest assured you can find a lightly used, really nice camper to meet your budget. With some basic information about the camper, you can use the NADA valuation tool to calculate an approximate price for the camper.

After the Buy

The costs of ownership don't stop in the parking lot. You will need to register and inspect your trailer, depending on which state you live in. Some states also require liability insurance and if you financed the unit, they too will want you to provide insurance.

There is a lot to learn about camping and towing. Be sure to practice hitching and unhitching the trailer. Read the owner's manual so you versed and prepared for any repairs, breakdowns, or maintenance issues. Campers require special maintenance, like winterizing and water proofing.

Begin having fun! Plan some local trips to learn how the camper works for you. What supplies do you need? How well did it tow? What were the problems, if any, you encountered? And finally, remember why you bought the camper - to spend time with your family, maybe to see the countryside, visit friends, attend events. Be sure to make the time for camping, follow through with your plans, and learn why so many people are in love with RV travel.
