Sorting Out the Different Car Warranties Offered and Why You Need Them

Buying a new car usually comes with some great benefits. Besides having that 'new car' smell, there is the warranty. The new car warranty is the automaker's guarantee to fix the items on your new car that break at no cost to you. When looking at buying a new car it is important that you understand the type of warranty is offered with the car. Let's take a look at the most common new car warranties and what they mean for you.

Bumper to Bumper New Car Warranty
The bumper to bumper is also known as the basic warranty. This generally is the one warranty that all new cars come with. The basic warranty is usually an exclusionary contract that covers everything on your car except for what is specifically excluded. Brake pads, wiper blades, tires, air bags, and batteries are usually considered wear and tear items and therefore excluded from the basic warranty. The standard bumper to bumper warranty on most new cars is 36,000 miles or three years whichever comes first. However, many automakers are now expanding that time and mileage to attract more customers.

Power Train New Car Warranty
Covering usually the engine, transmission, differential, and axles, the power train warranty is usually considered a supplemental contract that comes into effect when the basic warranty expires. The power train warranty offered on most new cars is usually five years and 100,000 miles. As with the bumper to bumper warranty, many automakers are extending the time and mileage to entice more new car buyers.

Emissions New Car Warranty
The engine transmission electronic-control systems, including the catalytic converter and onboard emissions-diagnostic devices are all covered for eight years or 80,000 miles under federal law. This warranty should be in effect for exhaust manifolds and spark plugs as well. The emissions warranty is a contract that all new cars are required to have when bought.

New Car Extended Warranties
When your dealer tries to sell you an extended warranty for that new car you have bought, you are not buying a warranty but rather a service contract. That service contract covers specific repairs after the basic warranty has expired. The basic, power train, and emissions warranties are all included in the price of the car. However, an extended warranty will cost extra, sometimes a lot more extra. Be a prudent buyer when it comes to buying an extended warranty service contract.

Losing the New Car Warranty
Being denied new car warranty service can happen and you need to be aware of the reasons why. Performing your ownmaintenance or having an independent repair shop do it is not grounds for denial. However, neglect or abuse of your car can get your warranty denied. Make sure that you follow the new car guide concerning routine maintenance, service scheduling, and make sure you save all receipts on your new cars' repairs.
