Finding a Doc Just Got a Bit Easier with ZocDoc.Com

It's like Finding a Restaurant, but for Doctors and Dentists

Patients often have trouble finding a primary care physician (PCP) every time their employer changes contracts with a health care network. ZocDoc.com is a service, free to patients, that helps them locate a health care provider who is convenient, accepts their insurance, and has an opening in his or her schedule.

It is also a great boon for travelers with medical emergencies, who usually do not have any idea what local physician will accept their insurance.

ZocDoc was established in New York City in 2007 and has grown steadily since then. You can now find a physician, dentist, primary care, dermatologist, eye-specialist, ENT, orthopedist, OB/GYN, allergist, podiatrist, cardiologist, pediatrician, radiologist and psychiatrist appointments in New York City, Washington DC, San Francisco, Chicago and Dallas. Washington, for example, has 45 dentists, 35 primary care doctors, 25 ob/gyns, and 5 cardiologists, plus other specialists.

Each city's page has info on the doctor's insurances, schedules, education, hospital affiliations, languages spoken, patient reviews, etc. Expansion plans into Boston, Los Angeles, Houston and Philadelphia are in the works.

To cut down on no-shows, new patients must submit at least part of their co-pay online before the appointment. But often the patient can see his or her new doc within the week, sometimes within a day. Appointments are routinely confirmed by email.

The CEO of ZocDoc is Cyrus Massoumi, the son of a hand surgeon and a former consultant with McKinsey & Co. Jeff Bezos of Amazon is one investor in the privately held company. Mr Massoumi was inspired by the success of OpenTable.com in helping people make dinner reservations online.

Younger doctors and patients are more comfortable with going online to find and schedule a physician. It seems that patients are thrilled to be able to find a doctor quicker than poring through a fat insurance network booklet, and being kept on hold for hours.

About half the doctors use electronic medical records, and almost as many use electronic prescriptions.

Patients can search the website by physician name, by practice, by location, by specialty, by condition, by insurance, by language, or by hospital affiliation.

Physicians and dentist pay to be listed in the service, but the location service is free to patients.
