So, what can you do to finish high school successfully, prepare yourself for college, and spare yourself social torture?
Online Programs: Although to most people these sound like illegitimate plan, there are some very reputable programs that can teach you more than any traditional high school could. I personally graduated from Keystone National High School with stellar grades that landed me acceptances to major colleges such as Hofstra University, University of Connecticut, and North Carolina State University. Online programs allow students to learn at their own pace, in their own time, and remove the pressure of social acceptance. Most of them have teachers readily accessible when you need help and provide quality curriculum. Many of these programs also include extra curricular activities students can take part in that allow them to beef up their college applications such as a school newspaper and student government. The world of online education has come along way in the last few years and it deserves a second look.
Charter Schools: Charter schools are fully operational schools that run on non-profit group funding and do not cost their students tuition. These schools often have a program emphasis such as technology, or allied health. The benefit of charter schools is that they are not run under the strict state statutes that govern public schools therefore; they can create a more customized learning environment to help students. In simple terms, charter schools are more laid back! Also, almost all of the students in charter schools attend to learn a certain discipline and are committed to doing just that. It is much easier for students who are interested in a certain topic to find their niche in these types of schools. Charter schools are becoming more and more common every year so finding one near you should not be a problem.
Alternative High Schools: Alternative High Schools (or mini schools) are often given a bad reputation, but they can be a viable option for those students looking for something different. Many of them offer a more flexible curriculum for students. Many of these schools have articulation agreements with community colleges, which will allow students to make the transition from high school to college easier as well as many times giving the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. Alternative High Schools are very popular in the United States and can be found almost anywhere. Sometimes they can be referred to as Technical High Schools. These programs really can provide an environment that is more like a college setting, focusing mainly on academics rather than social influence and extra curricular activities.
It is important to find a type of education format that works best for you. High school is the foundation for your future in the real world therefore, it is in your best interest to explore all of your options!
