Finding a Focus for Your Blog

This Wasn't as Easy for Me as I Thought it Would Be!

R.C. Johnson
Blogs are very popular, probably in part because they are the unique media property of the blogger. Every detail of the blog is chosen by the owner in a step-by-step process. Also, the entire blog can be had for zero cost since there are free blog hosting sites as well as a huge number of free templates available for the blogger's use.

Because most people have a multitude of interests, blogs can begin quite simply and then morph into different creatures as time goes on. Often the interest of the blogger becomes stronger in a different area and the focus changes. This is fine - the owner makes all the decisions. However, readers have certain expectations of what they will be finding when they have subscribed to a blog and may not like the new focus, thus moving on to other blogs with articles that are more in the vein of what they like.

Whatever the case, it is highly desirable for the blog to have a clearly recognizable focus with the contents of the blog adhering mainly to material that is aimed in that direction. Not everything comes together at once; fluffing and buffing is often needed once the blog is up and running.

You can find the particular focus you want for your blog by paying attention to your own interests. If you aren't interested in a theme or topic there is little chance that you will continue to write about it, and regular blogging is key to maintaining readership.

Your focus may fall within a narrow niche; adhere to a commonly-held interest such as gardening, cooking, books, management, or home improvement; or be one that serves a broad community of readers and spans the country or even the world as you delve into political affairs, health issues or perhaps arts and entertainment.

The beauty of having a blog is that you are free to decide in which direction you want to go. Finding that direction, or focus, may take some time and thought - the effort will be well worth it when it puts you on a course that will make blogging a fun and exciting adventure for writer and reader alike.
