Finding Freelance Work

Heather Wood
When searching for freelance jobs, it can be difficult to know the best websites to help assist you in your hunt. Freelance work is extremely popular, so expect plenty of competition. The best way to win the high paying jobs is by being incredibly active at searching for work numerous times per day.

Many freelancer websites pit freelance workers against one another. The company posts their job and then freelance workers from around the world provide a bid and their qualifications hoping to land the job. The job poster is then free to choose the best match to their company's needs. The following websites contain some of the best freelance jobs.

Careers From Home

Regardless of the work you desire, Careers from Home has huge listings of jobs with many of today's largest companies. Membership is $99.95 for a lifetime or $14.95 per month. Obviously, the lifetime membership is the better deal. One downfall with this company is that they do not guarantee the company that hires your services will pay you. If you run into non-payment issues, you must be prepared to battle the slacker by yourself.

Elance

Considered to be one of the largest freelance job search providers, Elance requires any freelancer to pay 8.75% of their earnings. They also require freelancers to use their billing and payment system. Jobs are available for many markets from web design to freelance writing to programming.

Freelance Writing:

If you want to scan current freelance job offers, Freelance Writing offers current job postings (non-paying, low paying, and high paying), writing tips, and discussion boards. The site is an excellent resource to freelance writers who are looking for current rates, companies who fail to pay, and questions on all aspects of writing. There is no membership fee.

Freelance Writing Jobs:

Deborah Ng's Freelance Writing Job blog contains a slew of listings and humorous columns as well. Deborah scans many sources for current freelance writing positions and posts them a few times per week. The jobs often range in pay, but there are great leads to follow up on.

Get A Freelancer:

At Get a Freelancer you have two options. You can pay $12 for a Gold Membership or take a free membership. If you select a free membership, you must pay them 10% or $5 (whichever is larger) any time your bid is selected and you gain the freelance writing job. Gold Members do not pay a percentage. Get A Freelancer provides freelance jobs of all varieties from graphics design to freelance writing.

iFreelance:

If you need freelance work, head to iFreelance. The website does not charge a percentage of work you select as some other websites do. With iFreelance, you pay a monthly membership charge (currently $5.25). This entitles you to provide them with a freelancer's portfolio and to bid on any jobs that appeal to you.

Journalism Jobs

Not every job at Journalism Jobs is a freelance position, but many of them do allow the journalist or writer to work from home. Journalism Jobs posts job listings for major newspapers, smaller newspapers, websites, businesses, and magazines. There is no membership fee.

I think Get a Freelancer is a bad choice. The majority of job posters there want writers to work for less than half of what the US minimum hourly wage is and have no respect for the writers.

There were some here I hadn't heard of before - thanks for the tips!
