If prices remain the same there will not be as much reason for people to demand more energy efficient vehicles or cheaper fuel sources. However, because of the price increase there is increased demand for E-85 and other cheaper forms of fuel. This will help us to begin to ween ourselves off of oil which we will eventually run out of. Fuels made of corn and other similar products will not have as much of a price increase and these forms of fuel will be available farther into the future as they can be planted and grown repeatatively.
The demand for more fuel efficient vehicles is also increased because of the higher gas prices. If the demand for these vehicles continues to increase more companies will begin to make them and eventually the prices of hybrid cars will come down and be more affordable to the average person. Additional research may also be caused by the demand for more efficient vehicles and could result in more ways to make vehicles efficient as well as other sources of power. With additional research and experimentation it is possible that electric cars may be developed to a point where they become as accepted as hybrids have become.
The higher gas prices may also result in more people using public transportation and developing less wastefull driving habbits. The increased fuels costs are split among many people for most forms of public transportation and will not have as much of an effect on the individual's prices. People will be less likely to leave their vehicles running when they don't need to, such as when they are parked waiting for someone or to heat up the car in the winter.
Many businesses have made changes to save on fuel as well. UPS changed their routes to avoid making as many left turns. Because the drivers don't have to wait for traffic as much the company has saved a large amount of money in fuel costs.
As gas prices continue to climb people will become more and more interested in fuel efficiency and as a result we will become less dependent on oil. While the increased prices are inconvenient now, hopefully they will bring a change for the better and be a blessing in disguise.
