Dazzle Your Prospective Employer
When fewer jobs are on the table, the competition can be fierce. In order to truly stand out from your peers you will need to show that you are the top candidate for the job. You can do this by taking the time to really prepare. The first step is to research the company you want to work for. Write down why you would like to work for this company and how you can be their greatest asset. Do you have any special skills that would make you stand out?
Polish your resume and wear your sharpest clothes. Prospective employers want to see that you are serious about the job. Keep in mind that you may need to go on several interviews before landing a job. This can be hard work, but don't get discouraged. Keep a positive outlook and continue to press on. If you are assertive and persistent in time you will land your dream job, even when the economy is on a downward spiral.
Interview Tips
* Arrive to the interview early or right on time. Go to bed early the night before and take extra time to prepare in advance. Be confident!
* Maintain direct eye contact and be sure to sit up straight in your chair. Avoid looking away and really listen to what your potential boss is telling you.
* Always wait until your interviewer is done talking before saying anything. One of the worst mistakes people make is to talk over others so they can quickly get in what they want to say before forgetting the words. Practice interviewing with friends or family ahead of time to avoid this common mistake.
* After you hear a question from the person interviewing you, pause just for a moment to think about how you are going to word your response. Avoid talking fast, speak clearly and get to the point. You don't want to tell this person your life story. Showcase why you are the best person for the job.
* Ask the interviewer to tell you more about the company and listen carefully. Demonstrate that you are truly interested in working for the company. Smile and leave a lasting impression.
* Ask and take note of when you will hear back about whether you got the job or not. Follow up during this time if don't get a phone call. If you didn't get the job for some reason ask why and use this information to help you prepare for your next interview.
