Do you remember a person who always makes you feel better or who gives you a sense of hope? Maybe a much loved aunt, an elderly neighbor or a high school friend. Get in touch with these people if it has been awhile. They were supportive then and usually they will be more than willing to be supportive of you now.
Try watching a kitten play with a pile of string for the first time in its life. Watch a baby's eyes on the first Christmas morning. These things will open you up to inspiration and remembered joy.
If you suffer from chronic depression, there are many effective treatments today. For myself, I have found working out is a good way to uplift my spirits. It has also greatly increased the likelihood of my getting a good night's rest. Also, if you tense your body when you're in a low mood, working out will likely give you a sense of well-being. This benefit lasts well beyond the actual time of exercising. As an extra bonus, once you get in shape (hey, round is a shape, right?) your self confidence will increase because your body is more toned and you feel better physically.
Again, for inspiration and to feel uplifted, draw on sources that have been helpful to you in the past. These things are key to opening up your heart and changing your outlook. I have found it useful to have a little notebook to jot down those things such as quotes and songs that are uplifting. With a little practice, you will be able to transform negative moments into positive and learn a skill that will bring you through tougher times.
