Finding Inspiration as a Freelance Writer

Different Ways and Places to Be Kissed by the Muse

Regina Sunderland
How often have you set pencil poised or fingertips on the keyboard only to draw a complete blank? The empty page or paper taunting you - daring you to fill its pristine empty space with your brilliance, only to despair at your inability to comply? If you are like the rest of us writers who feel called to share our thoughts, teach our wisdom, or in general nudge our creative our creative children into the world; read on and find different ways to overcome "blockages of mind".

Do not force the Muse, she is a passionate creature!

When you find yourself staring helplessly at your screen or page and frantically ravish your mind to find something to write, without results. Do not stress yourself out. Give yourself five minutes, if nothing creative comes to mind set down your pen, push back your chair, and walk away for now. Get yourself a cup of coffee or tea, put on some music, have a seat on a comfortable couch or chair, close your eyes, and relax. Simply let your mind drift away. Daydream about what you want, where you would like to go, and who/what you would like to see. By the time your cup is empty (savor the taste and smell), your mind and spirit will be full again. Go back and let your mind dictate the article/story to you. Sometimes you will end up with something completely different from what you set out to write, but ask yourself; "Does it really matter?" I notice that often I often end up using articles, stories, or prose that write them-selves through me and often end up being powerful.

Go for a ride on a public Bus or Train.

If you haven't been on a "trip" on a public transportation in a long time, you are missing a great meeting place for the Muse. When you are in a hurry to get from point 'A' to point 'B' the public transportation system is at best a hassle, yet if you have time take in the surroundings, you can unearth a Treasure Trove of Inspiration. Look at and listen to the people on the bus, pay attention to the driver, watch the scenery outside the window flow by. Maybe the bus driver will be willing to give you an interview on his/her next break; it could make for an interesting local interest piece. Maybe you an opinion interview from the working class staff.

What about that little old man/woman? Would he/she make a good character in your story? There are a dozen little dramas unfolding and endless possibilities!

Read a Book of Quotes.

Sometimes the wise or humorous words of someone else have inspired entire article for me. Sometimes they have helped me change my mindset enough to kick me in my creative behind.

Watch a Comedian you like on TV or DVD/VHS.

Not only is laughter the best medicine, it can also melt the tension away. Watch how he/she works the audience, listen to the punch lines. Look for the words behind the words.

Play with a child

Kids say and do the cutest things. They can simplify just about anything. Ask them to tell you a story or teach you a new game they made up. You will be surprised by the boast of interesting ideas you will get.

Cook a meal and invite someone you enjoy spending time with to enjoy it with you.

By relaxing and savoring good food and company, you enjoy one of the simple pleasures in life. Enlist help in brainstorming; ask for "outside opinion". Listening to someone else's thoughts, problems, and/or successes helps you get over your-self.

Those are a few things have helped me personally. I do not believe in being a "tortured" writer. I leave my mind, ears, and eyes open, and let the Muse romance me when and wherever she pleases.
