So you want to switch to a better retail job from your current position or you're looking to land your first job in retail. Conducting a job search to find just any retail position is usually not all that difficult because there are many jobs available in most cities in retail. However, the quality of retail shops vary greatly, so you should do all you can to put yourself in a position for advancement to land a job that will lead to satisfaction. If you like sales, you may want to look into a job that offers commissions for sales made.

The first place to start your job search for retail jobs would be by simply going around to retail locations in your city and asking if they are hiring. Even if they are not hiring, ask for an application. If you have a copier / scanner you can do this at home, if not, you will need to go to a store that has a copy machine. Once you have collected job applications from all places that you are interested in possibly working at, you should make a copy of each application. Now you will not have to worry again about getting resumes from different places in the future. It is often a good idea to submit a new application to a company, where you are interested in working, as often as every month. Often times, retail businesses receive a high volume of applications and they may discard them after a short period of time. By going in once a month to a business and submitting a new application, you will keep your memory fresh in their minds and they will see that you are committed to working for them.

The next step in your job search for a retail jobs is the interview process. Once you have submitted a number of resumes and followed up, by stopping in or calling them, you are likely to have got at least one interview. From the hiring manager's perspective, a job search for retail related positions can be a crapshoot. There is often high turnover in retail positions and the hiring manager may be unsure of an applicant's commitment to staying with the company. To make up for this, you want to be sure to be on time, dressed professionally, and to talk about your long-term career goals, specifically how you plan to advance within the company. Make it clear that you're not looking just for some quick cash, but rather for a long-term position.

By representing yourself to the fullest, you can make your job search for a retail related position fairly easy and not at all stressful. Just keep in mind to always smile and be pleasant, as this is what working in retail is all about.
