Finding Your Kids in a Group of Costumed Trick or Treaters

Jaipi Sixbear

Ever tried finding your kids in a group of costumed Halloween trick or treaters? It's not as easy as you think. You know your kids pretty well. That is, until they get lost in a sea of Halloween witches. All those pointy hats and straw brooms look alike. How do you know which witch belongs to you? There must be some way to tell them apart.

Look at their shoes. Unless you went all out and purchased witchy poo shoes, your kids are likely wearing their own. You see them everyday. You even bought them. Chances are, you'll recognize them before you recognize that masked face. See? There's that cute little peace sign written in ink. There's those crazy neon yellow shoelaces too.

Be original with your costumes. Think of the most outrageous, unusual thing you can. Try for a one of a kind look. Forget about the vampires and ghosts. Dress your kids in something nobody else will. Plop a plate of spaghetti on their heads. Paint them neon green. Do whatever it takes to make them stand out from the crowd. Memorize the little details that make your kids costumes unique.

Add an accessory. Give all your kids something crazy to wear with their costumes. Trends change from year to year so kicking it old school makes a big difference. Using last year's accessories helps a lot. You could also give all your girls some kind of glitzy bracelet or headband to wear. As for the boys, maybe a cool skull ring or something.

Dress them alike. One sure fire way to find all your kids in a group of Halloween trick or treaters is to dress them all alike. Give them all bright yellow smiley face t-shirts and seventies costumes or rainbow wigs and clown costumes. There are a lot of clowns in the world. See four clowns standing together? They're likely yours.

Partner up. Stick to your kids like glue or have them stick together. Sure, there are tons of witches, but how many are hanging out with Elton John all night? Memorize their friend's costumes to make this trick even more effective. There's two pirates over there, but Julie's friend was dressed as a werewolf, so that must be them standing together. It's fairly easy to find your kids in a roomful of costumed trick or treaters. Just look for the subtle details.
