Finding Old Friends

A Poem

Etienne J. Sarfelli
I don't understand why it surprises me so

To see how people have changed

I have grown up and moved away from my childhood home

But somehow I still expect to find people I used to know

As being exactly how I remember them

I look at pictures and barely recognize old friends

I can't even visualize the people they've become

They have turned out like nothing I would have expected

Are they good people? Have they found true love?

Are they longing for the same things they wanted when we were children?

Do they ever think about me too?

I wonder these things as I reach out to them

Trying to find some common ground

Hoping to recapture some of the happiness

We shared together so very long ago

Sipping sunshine punch in my back yard

Playing hide and seek and freeze tag

And kick ball in the street

I have been lucky enough to find many people

I knew many years ago

But with each old friend I find

It still amazes me

How much they have changed

And it makes me wonder

What they see

When they look at me

Maybe I have changed too

But I still feel the same as I did so long ago
