Finding a Part-Time Job to Supplement Your Income During a Recession

Use Your Spare Hours to Make Extra Money

Deb Flowers
When money is tight and prices are rising, sometimes a part-time job can help ease the financial strain. There are many part-time jobs that can be acquired without interfering with your full-time employment. With the help of the Internet and social networking, you can find a part-time position that will bring in a little extra cash and maybe even hone your skills in an area that will benefit you in the future. There are some things to consider when seeking part-time employment.

Be realistic about your schedule.

Take the time to write down your present schedule. Remember to include meetings you attend for work or other organizations, family activities and time spent on hobbies. Then you will have a visual description of spare hours you could spend working another job. Decide if you are willing to curtail some activities for a while in order to have more time for extra employment. Maybe a hobby could be put aside temporarily to help get your finances in order. When you have a clear picture of the hours you have available, you can begin your job search.

Take stock of your skills.

Are you a computer whiz? There are many part-time opportunities for people who can troubleshoot for those with computer problems. You can work for a company such as Best Buy, who hires for the Geek Squad, or you can become a consultant. Companies are looking for ways to cut their costs, so make yourself available to businesses that might be in need of computer services. Small, locally owned businesses would benefit from having a consultant who could be hired privately, rather than hiring someone through a larger company.

Do you have a knack for working with children? Daycare centers are a good source of part-time employment. Some daycare facilities are open throughout the evening hours, so if you are working a full-time job during the day, you could possibly work part-time in the evenings. Another source of extra income would be tutoring. Many teachers tutor in the evenings after school hours. You do not need to have certification to share your knowledge in an academic area. The best tutors are those who love the subject matter and who have the ability to explain the subject.

Are you a "people person" who enjoys meeting new people and interacting with them? Many stores trying to streamline their expenses are hiring part-time sales representatives. Another area to consider is merchandising. You represent a company by setting up displays and/or demonstrating a product to potential customers. Often these companies allow you to work around your own schedule.

By taking stock of the hours you have to invest in an extra part-time job, you can find employment that will bring in some cash as well as provide you with possible full-time opportunities in the future.
