Finding the Retro Wedding Cake of Your Dreams

Retro Wedding Cake Designs

When looking through old wedding images, I noticed that a majority of the wedding cakes were a couple of tiers with all white frosting. Having cakes with colored fondant or frosting is a trend that has only come about in the last 20 or so years. If you have decided to have a retro wedding, a simple tiered cake with white butter cream frosting would be very fitting. For a Mid Century Retro look, you should select bold graphics in bold colors such as red and black.

Cake toppers: If an older family saved their cake topper from their wedding, you could resuse it on your cake. This could be a good way to save money. Cake toppers are somewhat collectable but you should still be able to find a vintage one at a good price on eBay or another vintage seller. The toppers can range from the early 40's to the 60's.

President Wilson's daughter Jessie was married at the White House and photograph of her wedding cake is archived at the Library of Congress. This is an interesting cake. I like the picture because it gives you an idea of how a bride would have decorated for a wedding in 1913. The Library's summary of this picture is "Photo shows cake for wedding of Jessie Woodrow Wilson, daughter of President Wilson, who married Francis Bowes Sayre in a White House ceremony, on November 25, 1913". I have included the picture in the article's photo gallery.

Retro/ Rockabilly Fondant Cake: This is a cake that is covered in fondant. It is a very graphic design. There's not a lot of fuss or a busy cake topper. This is a good design if you have a lot of other "busy" decorations at your wedding. Ribbon could also be a good way to bring your wedding colors into your cake. If you got a plain white cake, you could add ribbon to your cake yourself and save a lot of money on a cake decorator.

People will argue about what exactly Retro means but if you are in your late 20's and up, this old school Nintendo game control cake, could be your groom's dream groom's cake!

Use of Stencils: Stenciling on cakes is a newer trend. It allows the cake artist to get a crisper design on the cake instead of piping it on or cutting out fondant. The cake featured in this retro-wedding uses stenciling. The cake sports the bold graphics that people think about when they think retro.
