Finding the Right Bourbon for Any Occasion

Helping You Find the Right Bourbon to Help Celebrate Any Occasion

Bourbon is a wonderful distilled spirit and is considered a true American drink. The United States Congress declared it the nation's official distilled spirit in 1964. To be classified as bourbon, it must be made anywhere in the United States and contain 51 percent corn have no added flavors as well as aged in charred oak barrels. A bourbon bottle labeled as "straight" will mean that it has been aged at least two years. Most bourbon is diluted with water to lower the alcohol proof; however, undiluted bourbon will have a label of "barrel proof" to show a higher alcohol content.

The Best Bourbon for Gift Giving
There are many great bourbons out there; however, one that is worthy of gift giving is Willet Pot Still Reserve. This bourbon is 94 proof and makes one remember what bourbon used to be like years ago. The Willet Pot Still Reserve has a buttery, cedar and slight lime taste that makes this a smooth bourbon. The bottle is shaped as an old time still, which makes it a great gift to give someone who loves bourbon.

The Best Bourbon for Mixing Drinks at the Party
Two mixed drinks that are making a comeback at many parties are the Manhattan and the old-fashioned. Both of these drinks use bourbon as its primary spirit. One of the better bourbons made for mixing drinks is the Maker's 46 from Maker's Mark. This 94 proof bourbon is stilled to be a bit stiffer and therefore better in mixed drinks. It is distilled in seared oak barrels and with a recipe that give is a slight sweetness.

The Best Bourbon for Yourself
Obviously, this is a personal choice; however, we can suggest a couple of great bourbons for you to enjoy at home. The first is a single barrel bourbon that is distilled in one barrel throughout its aging. Blanton's Original bourbon is a 93 proof and comes from a distiller that began single barrel aging back in 1984. You will find that Blanton's is a bold bourbon with slight toffee undertones. The second recommendation is George T. Stagg bourbon. This is a 143 proof bourbon that is "barrel proof" and therefore has a very high alcohol content. This soft sipping bourbon has aromas of maple, citrus, and some clove flavors.
